CCS Conducts Comprehensive Assessment for Newly Displaced Families in Lower Shabelle

In recent days, a growing number of families and individuals from Jambalul and other areas across the Lower Shabelle region have arrived in the Dubi Gaas area of Hawa Abdi, seeking safety and refuge due to difficult and uncertain conditions in their places of origin. The movement of these communities reflects the continued humanitarian pressures facing vulnerable populations in the region.

In response to the situation, Community Care Somalia (CCS) carried out field visits to the displacement sites in Dubi Gaas and surrounding areas. During these visits, CCS teams conducted rapid needs assessments aimed at evaluating the most urgent humanitarian gaps affecting the newly displaced households.

Assessment Focus Areas

The assessment process prioritized key life-saving and essential sectors, including:

  • Shelter: Evaluating access to temporary and emergency shelter materials, overcrowding conditions, and protection from weather exposure.
  • Food Security and Nutrition: Identifying immediate food shortages and the nutritional status of children, pregnant women, and other vulnerable groups.
  • Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): Assessing availability of clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene awareness to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Health Services: Reviewing access to primary healthcare services and emergency medical support.
  • Protection Concerns: Identifying risks facing women, children, elderly individuals, and persons with disabilities.

Preliminary observations indicate that many families are facing significant shortages in basic necessities, including adequate shelter materials, safe water supply, and consistent food access. Overcrowded conditions and limited sanitation facilities increase the risk of communicable diseases, particularly among children.

Recognizing Resilience

Despite the hardships they are enduring, the affected families have demonstrated remarkable courage, resilience, and determination. Their strength in navigating displacement and uncertainty highlights the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian action and sustained support.

Community Care Somalia (CCS) remains fully dedicated to standing with displaced communities in Lower Shabelle. The organization is committed to:
